First Seminole War (1816 - 1818) - the first of three wars fought by the U.S. to remove Seminole Indians from Florida. During this war, Andrew Jackson invaded Seminole territory in north Florida, killing Indians and burning their houses. Largely as a result of Jackson's activities, Florida was acquired by the U.S. from Spain in 1819.
